Security Measures Begin to Take Effect for G8 Summit

The Integrated Security Unit (ISU) closed the Controlled Access Zone (CAZ) around the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville on June 20 in preparation for the arrival of world leaders.

There will be no public access to the resort for the general public from now until after the G8 Summit on June 28. A small number of people who live within the CAZ will need to show accreditation in order to enter and leave the area.

A plan is in place to ensure emergency services will not be impacted.

Huntsville region residents are reminded that a larger Interdiction Zone around the Deerhurst Resort will also be in effect before the G8 Summit and accreditation will also be required for entry and exit.

In addition, marine restrictions will be put in place on Peninsula Lake in the upcoming days and road restrictions on a portion of Highway 60 and roads leading to Deerhurst on June 23. Residents and cottagers are encouraged to visit the ISU web site for the latest information on road closures and restrictions at www.g8-g20isu.ca.

The ISU is encouraging area residents to avoid these areas.

Information on start of security restrictions in Huntsville

Residents of Huntsville can expect security measures to protect the G8 Summit to be put in place on the morning of June 23. They are currently planned to stay in place until June 27. This includes restrictions on traveling on a portion of Highway 60 and roads leading to the Deerhurst Resort. See the map of alternate routes on this website.

Additional security measures could be put in place in other specific areas a few days prior to June 23. This includes restrictions on marine activities on Peninsula Lake that will begin on June 20.

There will not be any security-related parking restrictions in the downtown core of Huntsville during the G8 Summit. The Integrated Security Unit will have additional police officers in the area to help with the flow of traffic.

There will be no additional parking restrictions in the downtown core of Huntsville during the G8 Summit. Normal parking restrictions will be in place in the main business areas.

HuntsvilleThe Integrated Security Unit will have additional police officers in the area to help with the flow of traffic. Certain measures might be taken to ease traffic issues such as temporary road closures or restrictions.

Motorists and residents can expect delays and the ISU will endeavour to ensure that security operations have minimal impact on traffic.

Information regarding passes for residents in the interdiction zone in Huntsville

The Integrated Security Unit (ISU) has been informed by the Summits Management Office (SMO) that passes for residents in the interdiction zone in Huntsville will be available beginning June 15, 2010

The SMO is responsible for the accreditations for the G8 Summit in Huntsville. The ISU’s Community Relations Group has been assisting the SMO in this process. The CRG will now distribute the passes based on the following schedule:

  1. From Tuesday, June 15 to Friday, June 18: between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.
    On Saturday, June 19: between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
    On Sunday, June 20: between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
    LOCATION - Huntsville Mall, King William St, UNIT 5B - 6, Huntsville

  2. From Monday, June 21 until the end of the G8 Summit, passes will be available for pickup by those eligible to receive them between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Other pick-up times can be arranged with members of the CRG by contacting: (705)789-4970 or 1 888 446-4047.
    LOCATION - Community Relations Group, 1 King William Plaza, (Next to Family Restaurant), King William St, Huntsville

NOTE: It is recommended that residents/workers collect passes at the special location at Huntsville Mall between June 15 and June 20, to avoid delays.

Persons picking up passes will have to show photo ID (driver’s license, passport). Members of a household may be allowed to pick up passes for family members at the discretion of the members of the CRG.

New information on accreditations provided by the ISU on May 19, 2010

The Integrated Security Unit (ISU) has been informed by the Summits Management Office (SMO) that accreditations for residents and those who work in the security zones in Huntsville will be available the week of June 21.

The SMO is responsible for the accreditations for the G8 Summit in Huntsville. The ISU’s Community Relations Group has been assisting them in collecting information and providing outreach to the community regarding this process.

Information about the distribution of accreditation documents for those successfully accredited will be made available by the ISU through local media, the ISU website and email messages.

ISU Identifies Designated Speech Area in Huntsville

Designated Speech Area in HuntsvilleThe Integrated Security Unit (ISU) has selected a location for the Designated Speech Area (DSA) in Huntsville for the G8 Summit on June 25 and 26, 2010.

The DSA will be located on the west side of Golf Course Road, approximately 500 metres from Earl’s Road, north of Highway 60.

The selection of a DSA is part of the ISU’s efforts to support the peaceful exercise of freedom of speech and lawful assembly.

Parking for buses that may bring protestors to Huntsville has also been arranged.

G8 - G20 Airspace Restrictions

In June 2010 Canada is hosting the world's leaders at the G8 and G20 Summits being held in Huntsville and Toronto respectively.  From the 24th through the 28th of June there are going to be airspace restrictions in the proximity of venues hosting the summits as part of an overall comprehensive security profile.  The restrictions will potentially impact recreational or charter operators who utilize Huntsville or Toronto airspace.  To avoid any confusion as to the exact location and coordinates of the airspace including the prohibited operations within, the information will be available at the NAV CANADA website in the Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP).  Please review this information for any queries on airspace restrictions for either summit and be sure to read your NOTAMs prior to operating between June 24-28, 2010.

Restrictions lifted on Fairy Lake during G8 Summit

On March 2, the Integrated Security Unit announced that restrictions would be lifted on Fairy Lake during the G8 Summit in late June 2010.

Boating and other water activities will now be permitted. However, float planes will not be G8 Marine Restrictionsallowed to land in, or take off from, Fairy Lake because of Temporary Flight Restrictions that will be put in place in the Huntsville area during the summit.

Restrictions banning any type of vessel on Peninsula Lake and the canal between it and Fairy Lake will still be put in place from approximately June 23rd to June 27th. These dates are tentative and could change.

Canada will co-host the 2010 G20 meeting

On September 25, 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Canada will co-host the 2010 G20 meeting with the Republic of Korea. On December 7, 2009, the Prime Minister's Office announced that the G20 will be held in Toronto on June 26 and 27, 2010.

At this time, the G8 Integrated Security Unit is still going ahead with its plans to ensure a safe and secure summit in Huntsville on June 25 and 26, 2010.
